The Psychology of Organization: The Hidden Impact of Clutter on Your Mind and Body

Let’s be honest—life moves fast, and it doesn’t take long for our homes and workspaces to fill up with things we don’t need, use, or truly love. While it might seem like “just stuff,” the truth is, clutter can significantly impact our mental and physical health—sometimes without us even realizing it. That’s why understanding the psychology of organization is so important! It sheds light on why decluttering, owning less, and adopting intentional habits are essential for leading healthier, more balanced lives. In this blog post, we’re taking a deep dive into the connection between our spaces and our mindset. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get started!

Yes, even the Halloween candy got organized when I was a kid!

First, A Little Backstory

Let’s take a trip down memory lane—back to the days when I was just a kid. I truly believe that the passions we pursue as adults often stem from the little moments and habits we pick up along the way.

Growing up, my mom owned her own house cleaning business, and I’d often tag along while she worked. She’d cleverly deposit me in a playroom to keep me entertained, but instead of playing, I’d instinctively start organizing the toys (now that I think about it, I’m pretty sure she planned that all along—less mess for her to clean!). At home, I was the kid who rearranged furniture, decorated my room, and organized drawers just for fun. Looking back, it’s clear that organizing wasn’t just a chore or pastime—it was part of who I was.

Fast forward to adulthood, and my passion for order found new meaning. With a degree in Psychology, I was fascinated by how our environments influence our mental and emotional well-being. After I had my kids, I considered going back to school to get my Masters to work as a counselor, but ultimately I kept landing on the idea of coaching people to lead more organized, stress-free lives. But here’s the thing - I didn’t just want to coach people to be more organized, I wanted to do the actual organizing alongside them!

Thus, The Orderly Space was born! The early days didn’t bring about any Pinterest-worthy transformations by any means, but they were essential to me and my growth. The saying, “You have to start somewhere” couldn’t have been more true! I just dove in head first and let the details work themselves out along the way.

The Mental Toll of Clutter

This is where the Psychology Major in me nerds out! While you may think clutter only occupies physical space, it actually takes up mental space too. Studies show that disorganized spaces can increase stress, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm. Here’s why:

  • Decision Fatigue: Every item in your home demands your attention, whether you realize it or not. When you’re surrounded by clutter, you’re constantly making micro-decisions—Should I keep this? Move it? Use it? Donate it? This can exhaust your mental energy, leaving you less capable of handling more important tasks.

  • Cognitive Overload: Clutter bombards your senses, making it harder for your brain to focus. This can reduce productivity and increase feelings of frustration.

  • Emotional Weight: Clutter often carries emotional baggage. Items may trigger feelings of guilt (“I should use this more”), regret (“Why did I buy this?”), or nostalgia (“I can’t let this go—it reminds me of…”).

Over time, the mental burden of clutter can lead to chronic stress, which is linked to conditions like anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses such as high blood pressure.

The Physical Health Impacts of Clutter

It’s not just your mind that suffers in a cluttered environment—your body actually feels the effects too.

  • Poor Sleep: Clutter in your bedroom can create a sense of chaos, making it harder to relax and fall asleep. Poor sleep is linked to a handful of health issues, from weakened immunity to impaired cognitive function.

  • Increased Allergens: Dust, mold, and pet dander can accumulate in cluttered spaces, worsening allergies or respiratory issues.

  • Safety Hazards: Excess items can create tripping hazards, especially for older adults, and make it harder to navigate your space safely.

The Role of Intentional Shopping

Decluttering is only part of the equation. By shopping mindfully and intentionally, you can reduce the amount of unnecessary items in your home, saving you both money and mental energy! Here are some strategies to keep in the back of your mind:

  1. Adopt a “One In, One Out” Rule: For every new item you bring into your home, let go of an old one.

  2. Avoid Impulse Purchases: Give yourself time to think about whether you really need or want an item before buying it.

  3. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Invest in fewer, high-quality items, rather than accumulating pieces that won’t last.

Why Owning Less is Actually More

The minimalist movement has gained traction for good reason: owning less can lead to greater freedom, clarity, and happiness. Here are just a few of the benefits of living with less:

  • Less Maintenance: Fewer possessions mean fewer things to clean, repair, and store. This saves time and energy, freeing you to focus on he things you love!

  • Enhanced Decision-Making: A simplified environment reduces the number of choices you have to make, helping you feel more in control of your surroundings.

  • Greater Appreciation: When you own less, each item holds more value. Instead of being buried in excess, you truly appreciate and use what you have.

The Importance of Decluttering Regularly

Decluttering isn’t a one-and-done process—it’s a practice that should be revisited on a regular basis! Here’s why:

  • Life Changes: Our needs and priorities shift over time. What served you well a year ago might no longer fit your lifestyle today.

  • Prevents Build-Up: By tackling clutter regularly, you prevent it from becoming an insurmountable problem.

  • Mental Reset: Decluttering gives you the chance to reassess your space and align it with your current goals and values. I like to take a seasonal approach to decluttering—it’s my way of hitting the reset button on my home every few months, and giving myself the opportunity to decide what I actually use, love, and need (stay tuned for an entire blog post on this topic coming early next month!).
