The Ultimate End-of-Summer Home Reset
This summer, our family swapped the warm summer days of the Pacific Northwest for what we thought would be a cooler, rainier escape, spending three weeks wandering through Scandinavia.
It was incredible! Endless sunshine (surprise!), little villages that looked like they came right out of a storybook, and plenty of slow afternoons that made me forget what day it was.
But one of my favorite moments happened after we got home. We walked through the door, dropped our bags, and in an instant, life felt… normal again. Not the rushed, chaotic kind of normal, but the grounded kind. The kind where you can step right back into your daily rhythms, everything has a home, and you can unpack without feeling like you’re setting off a domino effect of mess.
That moment didn’t happen by accident. It happened because our home was ready for us to come back to.
And as summer winds down, it’s worth asking: is your home ready for the next season?
Because whether you’ve been traveling, juggling endless summer activities, or just soaking in slower days, the way you close out the season makes a big difference in how you start the next one.
Here’s how to pack up summer with intention so that next year is easier, and September starts with more calm than chaos.
Declutter Before You Store
If something didn’t get used all season, chances are you don’t need to save it for next year.
Let go of:
Worn-out towels
Expired sunscreen
Broken inflatables or toys
Outgrown swimsuits and water shoes
The five extra beach bags you somehow collected
Summer clothes you never reached for this season
Storing only what you actually use frees up space and prevents you from unboxing clutter next summer.
Store Summer Gear the Right Way
Instead of tossing everything in a bin and hoping for the best, take a few extra minutes now to store things so they’re ready to use next year.
Wash, dry, and properly put away towels, swimsuits, and water shoes.
Group like items together. Keep goggles with snorkels, folding chairs with umbrellas, sunscreen with bug spray, etc.
Label your bins clearly so you don’t have to dig through mystery storage next summer.
It’s a small step that will save you so much time (and sanity!) when next year rolls around.
Rotate Seasonal Items
Think of your home like a store. Keep the “best shelf space” for what’s in season right now.
In your closet, let swimsuits, sandals, and tank tops take a back seat (or a higher shelf), and move scarves, boots, and sweaters front and center where you’ll actually reach for them.
Store summer gear completely out of sight so it’s not taking up mental or physical space, and start bringing out the cozy blankets, candles, and fall touches that make your home feel warm and inviting.
In the kitchen, swap BBQ tools and picnic gear for baking ingredients, pie dishes, and mugs you’ll want on hand for chilly mornings.
These small swaps keep what you need right at your fingertips and make your daily routines feel effortless as the seasons change.
Give Your Car a Deep Clean
From sandy floor mats to sticky cup holders, summer has a way of leaving its mark on your car. Before the school year or fall routines kick in, give it a quick reset:
Empty out anything that doesn’t belong.
Vacuum crumbs and sand.
Wipe down every surface: cup holders, seats, steering wheel, door handles, and the dashboard.
Restock any essentials you like to keep on hand: tissues, gum, a phone charger, snacks, etc.
It’s one of those quick tasks that will make a big difference every single day (especially when you’re spending so much time in the carpool line!).
Prep Your Spaces for Structure Again
Even if you don’t have kids heading back to school, fall tends to come with more structure.
Ease the transition by:
Setting up (or refreshing) your drop zone for bags, jackets, and shoes.
Creating a system for incoming mail and papers.
Restocking your lunch-packing or coffee area.
Making these small adjustments now will make a big impact once September hits!
Why Doing This Now Matters
Closing out summer with intention isn’t about perfection, it’s about making space (literally and mentally) for the season ahead. It’s giving your future self the gift of less digging, less stress, and more room to enjoy what’s next.
And when next summer rolls around? You’ll be ready to hit the beach (or hop on a plane to Scandinavia!) without the scramble.
